:Balakheri: "Undoubtedly One Of The Best Colts Of His Generation" IRISH FIELD
Winning at Royal Ascot as a three year old and close up in two of the classics, Balakheri was undoubtedly one of the best colts of his generation, rated 121 in Timeform's Racehorses of 2002.Trained at Newmarket by Sir Michael Stoute, Balakheri raced three times at two years old and ended his first season with a three lengths victory in the Oath Stakes over a mile at Nottingham, beating a dozen rivals, having previously run a close second at Leicester.Reappearing in the Swaffham Handicap at Newmarkets Craven meeting in April, Balakheri was again an impressive three lengths winner, carrying 9 st and this time beating 22 others.Taking a big step up in class, he next went for the Group 2 Dante Stakes at York in May and was beaten only two lengths into third place by Moon Ballad with Group 1 winner Where Or When fourth.
In the Group 2  King Edward VII Stakes (ASCOT DERBY) over 12 furlongs at Royal Ascot, Balakheri took his revenge on subsequent St Leger winner Bollin Eric, carrying Top weight and defeating him impressively by 4 lengths, with First Charter back in third. Balakheri's other two outings were both in classics, starting second favourite for the Group 1 Budweiser Irish Derby finishing 6 lengths off High Chaparral just 9 days after winning at Royal Ascot & finishing 6th
in the Group 1 English St Leger at Doncaster.
In International Classifications, Balakheri was assessed as the joint second
Best three year old colt over 12 furlongs trained in Great Britain in 2002.

Staying in training at four years old, Balakheri was raced always in Group events, and he was a close third to French Stars Ange Gabriel and Martaline in the Grand Prix de Chantilly early in June, and finished ahead of the high class filly Ana Marie and with the multiple Group 1 winner Westerner along way behind him.

Balakheri's dam Balanka, a daughter of Alzao, was a listed winner at Deauville and ran third in the Group 2 Prix de l'Opera and fourth in both the Group 1 Pix de Diane and Grade 1 Matriarch Stakes at Hollywood Park. Her dam Banana Peel scored twice in the USA and is a half sister to three French Stakes winners. One of those was Beaune, whose son Bering won the Group 1 Prix du Jockey club and is one of the outstanding sires standing in Europe, with over 50 stakes winners to his credit.
