Date: 12 / 05 / 2005 Mercy Rimell The only woman ever to train a Cheltenham Champion Hurdle Winner was Mercy Rimell. She was assistant trainer to her late husband Fred Rimell who between them Won 2 Champion Hurdles’ Comedy of Errors’ 73/75. 2 Cheltenham Gold Cups’ 67/76, Woodland Venture’ Royal Folic’ & 4 Aintree Grand Nationals’ ESB’ 56, Nicholas Silver’ 61, Gay Trip’ 70, & Rag Trade’ 76. Following the death of Fred in 1981’  Mercy took over the Trainers Licence and Won the Champion Hurdle in her own right in 1983 with Gaye Brief. She trained many of that family and retained Gaye Memory as a brood mare having won 2 Bumpers. One of the off springs Simon now runs in her colours and is trained by Philip Fenton and earned more Black Type for this famous pedigree this season. Mercy now in her 86th year recently paid a visit to Woodfield Farm Stud’ Glendalligan to view the latest Gaye Memory offspring a filly by Karinga Bay now a resident at the Woodfield Farm Stud.
